Australians celebrated from across the globe as news of the Senate passing the same-sex marriage bill broke yesterday afternoon, with 43 yes votes, and 12 no votes. POPSUGAR Australia explains the decision in further detail, "The bill was presented on Monday morning, and amendments to it debated in the House of Representatives on Thursday. The final amendment was voted down 63-79, resulting in the official legalisation of same-sex marriage in Australia."

With the long-awaited decision finally coming to pass, you may be wondering when same-sex couples will be able to tie the knot? And according to the ABC, based on statements from Senator Brandis, it could be as early as January 9 next year, "These historic reforms will commence on Saturday 9 December 2017," Senator Brandis said in a statement. Also stating that, "as from Saturday, same-sex couples will be able to lodge a Notice of Intended Marriage to commence the one month minimum notice period required before the solemnisation of marriages under the Marriage Act."
