Want to Be Productive? Do This Before Getting Out of Bed Each Morning
Between work assignments, social engagements, and spending quality time with family, it goes without saying that we're always searching for the latest and greatest productivity hack. From different to-do list methods to setting self-improvement goals, we've run the gamut when it comes to finding ways to do more with less. But thanks to Fatherly's Jonathan Stern, we may have uncovered the holy grail of productivity hacks—one that doesn't even require you to leave your bed.
Stern references Charles Duhigg's most recent book, Smarter, Faster, Better, which explores "the science behind how the most productive people in the world prioritise, focus, make decisions, and motivate." Duhigg, an author, journalist, and Pulitzer Prize–winning reporter for The New York Times, interviewed everyone from drill instructors to the team behind the instant classic Frozen about how they increase productivity on a day-to-day basis. While Fatherly's resulting list packs a powerful punch, one hack in particular stood out: visualisation.
"[Visualisation] is about telling ourselves stories about what we expect to occur," explains Duhigg. "I spend 10 minutes visualising what my day is going to be like. It helps sharpen your focus. You're teaching your near subconscious what to focus on and what to ignore." The best part? This can be done while in that half-asleep, half-awake state right after your morning alarm sounds. Mentally walk yourself through the day ahead of you, painting a vivid picture of success, productivity, and accomplishment. If you'd rather think long-term, you can visualise what your life will be like down the line, once you've achieved all of your goals. Visualising what you want—today, tomorrow, and 10 years from now—helps you to focus throughout the day and prioritise effectively.
