Award-winning journalist Celeste Headlee gave a TED Talk in 2015 that is still just as relevant today, and probably always will be—hence the seven million views. Headlee revealed her rules for having better conversations and by taking her advice, you'll never find yourself trapped among dull small talk again.

Business Insider Australia highlighted a few of Headlee's key statements, one being, “I kind of grew up assuming everyone has some hidden amazing thing about them. And honestly, I think it's what makes me a better [radio] host.” This means the secret to thrilling banter is find out the one thing that makes your conversation partner unique. You will come across more genuine in the interaction if you're authentically interested in what the person is saying, so ask questions until you discover what that one thing is and you won’t be able to get them to stop talking (plus, you'll actually enjoy yourself more, too).
