Inside a Coastal California Home With Mediterranean-Inspired Style
California, known for its effortless, laid-back style, often inspires residents to opt for breezy, beachy décor details. This dreamy, southern California family home, however, stands apart from the rest. Thanks to the keen eye of Orange County-based designer Mindy Gayer the posh Newport Coast home captures the Golden State's signature casual style without veering into kitschy territory.
Boasting shades of blue, the interior's cool colour palette sets the tone for the spacious, coastal-inspired Newport home. "As much as wanted to keep things light and white, we also wanted to infuse a bit of those coastal blue hues, each with their own unique tone, throughout all of the custom cabinetry and some of the upholstery pieces," Gayer told MyDomaine. "Nothing too beachy, but very much full of depth and character." As you'll see ahead, she nailed it.

Originally built in 1995 as a tract home, the three-bedroom home underwent a complete interior remodel. "Many of the homes in this community were built in the mid-90s and have a Mediterranean architectural style with a good floor plan, but the desperately outdated finishes and design details were in dire need of TLC," explained Gayer.
"The project was approached as a full interior gut and remodel," the designer explained. Not one room or finish was left intact, so Gayer worked with her clients to completely curate the space. "[We] started with a blank slate, even down the furnishings, so we were able to reinvent each and every space, tailored with the finishes and fixtures [my clients] loved most, all with a bit of personality," she added.
Home to an international family of three who moved to California to enjoy the state's quintessential indoor/outdoor lifestyle, Gayer aimed to strike a stylish yet functional balance. "We made sure to make every room is light, bright, and infused with a calming design sense, as well as bits of whimsy and personality to make things full of life—nothing too fussy that it couldn't be lived in and enjoyed by this young family," the designer explained.
The living room, which overlooks the Pacific ocean, boasts a set of custom-made indigo chairs that mimic the brilliant blue waters below and lend a bit of color to the naturally lit space.
In the master bath, an all-white colour scheme takes full advantage of the fact that the space is flooded with sunlight daily.
Just steps from the Jack-and-Jill sinks, a luxurious freestanding tub is situated in front of a window with a gorgeous view.
Whitewashed wood plank walls keep with the beachy California vibe and prevent the Calacatta marble shower from feeling too European.
Shades of beige, blue, and purple lend a sense of tranquility to the master bedroom. A windswept landscape adorns the wall, contributing to the calming air and tying the colour scheme of the room together.
In the home office space, a collection of artfully arranged woven baskets creatively fill an otherwise blank white space.
Custom cabinetry in a deep shade of blue carries the coastal-inspired palette into the workspace.
In the guest bedroom, navy-and-white–striped accessories lend subtle nautical vibes.
A colourful floral accent wall in a kid's bedroom marks a distinct departure from the blue tones found throughout the rest of the home.
The pigment-soaked print boasts pink hibiscus flowers, lending playful tropical flair without deviating entirely from the beachy aesthetic of the home.
