A French Family Gives a Historic Townhouse a Hip Twist

Julia Millay Walsh

The American flag hanging in the Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn kitchen of fashion executive Florence Mars and her husband, Alexandre, an entrepreneur and philanthropist, is a tad misleading. The pair are in fact French; they relocated temporarily to New York from Paris for a two-year stint, but wanting to give their children a cultural education, the pair decided to make it a more permanent stay. So perhaps the flag is a symbol for their love of their new home. With a monochrome palette, edgy artwork, and artful accents, the family's 1851 townhouse, which was recently featured in NYCG (New York Cottages & Gardens), has a beautiful balance of European chic and hipster Americana.
