It’s a very big news day for one of the world’s most influential couples—while not only announcing the exciting news of the birth of their daughter, Max, Mark Zuckerberg and Dr. Priscilla Chan have also announced the launch of the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative—an organisation with the mission to advance human potential and promote equality. Initially, the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative areas of focus will impressively include personalised learning, curing disease, connecting people, and building strong communities.

Zuckerberg released an open letter on Facebook today which describes his and Priscilla's commitment to investing for the next generation which includes contributing 99% of their Facebook shares (currently worth about $45 billion USD as of today) during their lives to advance the mission. "We must make long-term investments over 25, 50, or even 100 years. The greatest challenges require very long time horizons and cannot be solved by short-term thinking,” says Zuckerberg.

To top it off, they also released this video which shows the generous duo discussing the announcement which is nothing short of inspiring.

Well done, Mark Zuckerberg and Dr. Priscilla Chan, well done.
