Studio Tour: A Music Composer's Hollywood Hills Workspace
For interior designer Lindsay Pennington, designing an office for a Los Angeles-based music composer came easily, as the client was her husband, Tim Mosher. The couple live with their two sons in Laurel Canyon, an area of Los Angeles rich in musical history. "Frank Zappa lived on our street; the Doors had a house up the street from us; Jim Morrison, Joni Mitchell, Graham Nash -- the list of influential musicians who called Laurel Canyon home goes on and on," says Pennington. The location wasn't the only factor in the design for Lindsay, though. A few other considerations were taken in the design, and we recommend these for any musical, manly space. "When we met, Tim already owned this great collection of rock photography, most of which is black and white. So for the most part we kept the colours muted and neutral to complement the art," says Pennington. The neutral space also allowed the colours of patterned accents, like the Persian rug (a gift from a friend) and ethnic Zak + Fox pillows from Hollywood at Home, to pop as well.
Because the space is both an office and a recording studio, much of its décor is multi-functional. "An amplifier serves as the printer stand and the Milo Baughman-style étagère provides storage space for books and mementos and serves as a bar," -- the latter of which Tim says is always kept stocked. In a small space like an office, multi-purpose furniture is essential.
With such a functional and comfortable room in the house, it's no wonder that the family uses it generously. "It's become more than just an office for Tim and our family. There's a big TV, which was one of Tim's few imperatives: he hosts friends to watch football games or the occasional 'guys' movie night' with our sons when I'm travelling," Pennington says. "Many of our dinner parties migrate into the office for a late night drink, too. Nothing beats a night in the office with Tim and his friends, laughing and playing guitar, with music radiating out the open windows into Laurel Canyon."
