Keeping Up With Castillo: A Vibrant Living Room

Peter Dolkas
Last time we met up with Spanish designer Lorenzo Castillo, he shared a masculine loft with rustic accents. His latest design, however, proves he's got plenty of glam to go around. With unexpected colour combinations, perfect pattern placement, and a wonderful mix of styles, Castillo has created yet another room brimming with character.  Here are a few ways to channel Castillo's creativity in your own space. _1 When it comes to mixing patterns, it's all about variety. Here, Castillo mixes stripes, damask florals, and graphic prints for a well-rounded mix. By placing the two large-scale prints on the floor and the windows, the room has a sense of balance. Avoid loading up one area of a room with all of the patterns; spread the love!

_2 Although you may have not noticed it right away, Castillo is majorly channeling Chinoiserie in this living room. In addition to the vases of flowering branches, that give us a total tea-garden vibe, the mixture of Eastern and Western styles is abundant and done in a modern way. The blue porcelain lamps, a classic Chinoiserie piece, are topped with black drum shades for a quick update.  Nice move, Castillo.

_3 We love blue as much as the next guy - Castillo in this case - but, breaking up the monotony of using one colour is important. With a graphic blue rug, blue stools, and blue table lamps, it's hard to believe a large blue sofa would work in this room. But, Castillo calms down the colour by layering beige-striped pillows on the sofa. This unexpected pairing prevents a blue overdose, something we never thought we'd suffer from.
