3 Knife Skills to Master by Age 30
Dicing a carrot or slicing onion might seem like a fairly elementary skill, but people who have watched a pro chef in the kitchen can attest that there's an art to using a knife. Home cooks, take note: Goop has created a step-by-step guide to help you improve your technique. These are the simple knife skills everyone should master by age 30. How many can you do?
- Remove the ends of the onion; then cut it in half. Peel off the outer layer, and cut out the root.
- Lay the onion flat-side down, and slice at a slight angle, following the curve of the onion until you reach 3/4 of the way through.
- Flip the onion so the largest surface is on the board, and finish slicing.
- Cut off the ends of the carrot, peel it, and chop it in half.
- Cut the carrot in half lengthways; then position the pieces flat-side down on the board.
- Cut it in half again to make four sticks; then use your hand like a claw and dice the carrot.
- Place the garlic clove on a board; then lay the knife blade flat over the top. Use your nondominant hand to push down on the flat blade, crushing the clove.
- Use a paring knife to remove the peel and cut up the garlic. According to Goop, using a pairing knife minimises the amount of garlic juice that gets on your fingers.
