Meet The PR Guru Behind Some of Australia's Most Coveted Fashion Brands
In honour of our co-founders Hillary Kerr and Katherine Power’s latest book, The Career Code: Must-Know Rules for a Strategic, Stylish, and Self-Made Career ($19), we’re running an interview series featuring 17 questions (to parallel the book’s 17 chapters) about the work lives of inspirational female leaders who are at the top of their fields. So far, we’ve tapped Lisa Messenger, Pip Edwards, Kelly Wearstler, and more. Next up? Kelly Müller.
When Kelly Müller isn’t acting as MyDomaine Australia’s resident contributor, she’s working her PR and marketing magic for some of Australia’s most coveted fashion and lifestyle brands.
Once the marketing director at Stylerunner and PR and communications guru at ModelCo, Müller has proven she’s at the top of her game since launching her own boutique marketing, PR and brand strategy consultancy, KMC, late last year. The Sydney-based agency may have only just landed on the PR scene, but considering its clients include some of the most desirable fashion and lifestyle brands in town (hello, P.E Nation, Zulu & Zephyr, The Vista, One Teaspoon, and Lounge Lovers), it’s safe to say it has already made a name for itself.
We chatted with Müller to find out how she stays up-to-date with the ever-evolving industry, the top five qualities she looks for when she’s hiring, the best career advice she’s ever received, and everything in-between. Aspiring girl bosses, read on.
There are so many incredible people I'd love to meet with—Chrissy Teigan (hilarious), Michelle Obama (empowering and intelligent), Elon Musk (innovative and creative), however I would love another 30 minutes of Pip Marlow's time. The former Managing Director of Microsoft and now CEO of Strategic Innovation at Suncorp made a huge impression on me when we first met a few of years ago. She agreed to a one on one catch up while I was pregnant where she shared her experiences and advice as a working mother. She's a passionate, warm, and incredibly intelligent woman who is doing so many great things for modern-day employment (such as flexible working hours) as well as leading one of the most successful technology companies in the world.
Mornings are all about my daughter, Sunny. When she wakes up, I pull her into bed with me for cuddles and we read a book. On the days I don't head into the office, we jump on my bike and ride to the beach for a swim. I would love to say evenings are my own, but after Sunny has gone to bed, its dinner with my husband then into all of the emails I didn't get to during the day.
