This Stationery Designer's Bondi Home Gets Small-Space Design Right
Founder of stationery and lifestyle brand An Organised Life, Beck Wadworth, has just proved exactly that. Wadworth’s tiny Bondi apartment, located just a stone’s throw from the iconic beach, is confirmation that small can be practical, highly functional, and (most importantly) super chic.
The graphic designer, social media strategist, and self-confessed organisation fanatic is the small-space queen. Her use of minimalist designs, a classic monochromatic colour palette, and clean, sleek lines has transformed her space-challenged home into an Instagram-worthy one. Wadworth has shared with her genius small-space tricks so we can do the same. Apartment dwellers, read on.
It’s all about hierarchy when you are styling a small space. I always stick to the method of two thirds of light colour and one third of dark colour. For example, in my lounge the walls are white and I have a light grey couch. I contrast this with a black coffee table, black picture frames, and also touches of black in my cushions.
When you have a small space to work with, it’s important that you create a strong inspiration board and theme. Take your time to create a beautiful space that is functional, inspiring, and “you”. It’s important that your space feels balanced and fresh. Keep it simple.
To give your small space a bit of life add a simple yet beautiful plant like a Peace Lily or Fiddle Leaf Fig—it will change the space completely.
Create a home for everything and invest in storage solutions that fit your aesthetic and theme. For example, book shelves, hidden drawers under your bed, or a beautiful chest that can double as a coffee table—function and style combined.
Make the most of your space and always place your main furniture, such as your sofa and chairs—around the edges of the room against the walls. To give the idea of a bigger space pick a round coffee table that will create more negative space visually and for physically walking around as well.
Mirrors are your best friend when it comes to a small space! They give the illusion of the room looking bigger. Try a floor length mirror in your bedroom or a statement round mirror in your lounge.
When you have a small space it’s important to keep on top of things. Have a spring clean every month to stay on top of clutter. Re-organise your wardrobe, cupboards, and drawers and discard anything that you don’t need or wear.
Now for the fun part! Add simple details to your space that dress it up and take it to the next level—my favourite accessories are art pieces or typography posters, cushions, candles, and statement lamps.
The number one rule, less is more—if you don’t need it, you simply don’t need it.
