Home Tour: Hand-Crafted Modern in LA
THE DOSSIER: NAME: Glen Lawson. TRADE: Co-Owner of furniture and accessory showroom Lawson-Fenning. VIBE: Modern eclectic with an emphasis on natural materials. ABODE: 1920s Spanish Colonial Revival in the Los Feliz area of Los Angeles, CA.Lawson-Fenning, a pair of carefully curated showrooms showcasing both original and vintage furniture as well as global finds, is a design destination for tastemakers. So when Glen Lawson, co-founder of the line and a furniture designer himself, needed assistance renovating his own abode, he turned to friends David John Dick and Krista Schrock of DISC Interiors. "He had already lived in the home for just over a year but really wanted our help," Dick says. In order to stay true to the home's Spanish Colonial Revival style, the group got to work researching. "We immediately began pulling inspiration for Spanish homes and looking at materials that felt timeless, yet modern," Dick says. It's this combination of like-minded aesthetics, a desire to stay true to the home's architecture and style, and the thoughtful consideration of materials, that gives this residence that special something.
"We can honestly say this project was a true collaboration with Glen that began with a simple conversation over coffee," Dick says. In addition to the renovation of the kitchen and master bath, DISC Interiors also rounded out Lawson's existing furniture collection by selecting colour palettes, custom furniture, window treatments, and rugs. "Our friendship with Glen gave us an immediate insight as to how he lives, the colours, and textures he is attracted to," Dick says. "Glen shares our love for local designers and artisans, many of which are our friends, so the whole project really propelled itself quickly," Dick notes. "It's easy to collaborate when you share the same references."
It was important to the team to work with some of the existing architecture and the materials of the home using these as inspiration for the new additions. "The integrity of the architecture of the main living room was our primary concern," Dick says. The wall surface and fireplace are original to the home and help establish the textural interplay the new elements, like the vintage Moroccan rug and Lawson-Fenning sofa, create. Though a completely new room, which began as a small dirt-floor space under the kitchen, the design of the master bath also reflects a combination of fresh features contrasted with vintage-inspired details. Using Belgian cabinetry design as a reference, the vanity was made to feel like a piece of furniture to work with the handcrafted feel of the home and the furnishings. The unlacquered brass plumbing fixtures and custom shower enclosure help further lend a sense of age to the new addition.
A combination of furniture designed by Lawson along with vintage pieces and local art, lend a layered and distinctly personal vibe to the entire space. "Our design was driven by Glen's furniture and object collection," Dick says. Appearing throughout the home are painted circular works from a local artist who is represented in Lawson's showrooms. "They are simply wonderful, serving as quietly vivid 'punctuation marks' in the rooms," Dick adds. Another visual theme, seen throughout Lawson's designs and a signature of the DISC Interiors team: natural materials and worn finishes. Raw linens, burlaps, patinated bronze, and aged woods mix and harmonize to bring out the warmth in each other. Just as the best of friends should.
