MyDomaine: What inspired you to start your own line?
Ellen DeGeneres: I love interior design. It’s what I would do if I wasn’t blessed with the gift of comedy. And people seem to like how I decorate. They’re always like, “Where did you get that awesome thing over there?” and “Where did you get that cool thing over there?” I had this moment where a light bulb went on over my head. I thought, I should start my own collection. It turned out Portia had turned the lights on, but still—it inspired me to create this line.
MD: What do you think makes a well-designed and comfortable home?
ED: I guess I would have to say things that are well-designed and comfortable make a well-designed and comfortable home. I think placing objects you love around the house is important. The smell is important. I think it’s up to each individual. You should surround yourself with things and people you love and you’ll always feel at home.
MD: What were some of your inspirations for the home line and the items available?
ED: I’m inspired by everything around me—the subtle colour palettes in nature, my favourite animals, the patterns of leaves, soft fabrics, my desk, my phone, my stapler, my tape dispenser, my tissue box, a random key—ok, now I’m just naming things that are around me right now. But I can find inspiration in anything.
MD: What's your favourite piece in the collection?
ED: I love the hand-painted animal plates. Everyone who knows me knows I love animals. And I’m so happy we were able to incorporate them into the collection. It’s very me and me likey very much.
MD: Who do you think is the quintessential ED customer?
ED: Everyone! You! And you! And you! And you! And that guy! It’s for everyone, including goats.
MD: What types of vintage or antique items are you always on the hunt for for your own home?
ED: Just anything that speaks to me. Not literally, that would be creepy. It’s one of those things where I know it when I see it. Like an antique bowl might strike me at one place, and an old painting of a man wearing a hat might strike me somewhere else. If there was an old painting of a man inside an antique bowl, I would for sure buy it.
