The Aisle: Inside This Creative Director's Seriously Cool Whale Beach Wedding
As the creative director of ELLE Australia, it’s no surprise Carly Roberts' (nee Townsend) wedding day was as cool, refined, and stylish as the talent herself. Roberts, 31, married her partner of seven years, Mitchell Roberts, 33, in a ceremony that every bride-to-be would dream of. Dressed in Collette Dinnigan, Alexander Wang pony hair heels and Dior Tribales earrings, the bride and groom exchanged vows in a relaxed but elegant setting at the iconic Moby Dicks on Sydney’s picturesque northern beaches. Teamed with six groomsmen, two bridesmaids, a French Bulldog flower girl named Ninja (the third member of the Roberts' family), a cute-as-they-come page boy, and 150 guests, the husband and wife duo confessed it was everything they imagined plus a whole lot more. Read on and see inside this creative’s wedding that can only be described as magic.
On the dress…
“My dress was actually from Colette Dinnigan's final range and it was the first on I tried on. My style isn’t normally feminine so I thought finding a wedding dress would be a tricky task. It’s elegant and feminine but its prominent structure, high neckline, and capped sleeves suited my classic style with comfort being the most important thing for a night of dancing.”
On the hair…
“My favourite hair stylist Travis Balcke did hair. I had a natural, classic blowdry and my bridesmaids had the same with a simple pull-back from the sides which was elegant but understated.”
On the groom’s and groomsman outfit…
“My husband Mitch has great style so I left both his and the groomsmen’s outfits completely up to him and he chose navy velvet corduroy jackets by Marcs, burgundy Chinos by calibre, black suede shoes by Urge, and maroon velvet bow ties to top it off.”
On the venue…
“I grew up on the northern beaches so I felt so lucky to be able to get married in such a beautiful venue near where I grew up. We had both the ceremony and reception at Moby Dicks in Whale Beach and I couldn’t have asked for a better venue or location. The view is unbeatable, the hospitality is next to none, and the rustic but classic relaxed interior style suited us and our style down to a tee."
On the bridesmaids…
“My two bridesmaids wore dusty pink dresses from Zimmerman which were the same fabric, but different styles with matching nude Zimmermann heels—they looked elegant, but relaxed, exactly how I imagined.”
On the styling…
“Styling geniuses Amy Starr (Beauty and Lifestyle Associate of ELLE) and Alexis Teasdale (Managing Editor of Cosmopolitan Bride and Founder of The Festive Co) were my stylists for the day and they created a wedding even better than I could have imagined. It wouldn't have been the festivity it was without them.”
On the flowers…
“I used Wild Lotus in Newport for my flowers and they created the bouquets, the beautiful ceremony arch, and set up the most gorgeous flower market inside the reception which resulted in every guest partying with flower crowns for the entire night.”
On the wedding favours…
“For our wedding favours we had cactus’ which were grown by our stylist, Amy’s brother, and because my husband, Mitch and his mates are avid surfers, we had custom-made surfboard wax called “Ninja Wax” made which had a picture of our French Bulldog, Ninja, on them.”
On the shoes…
“My shoes were white pony hair Alexander Wang mules that I’ve worn many times since—they are classic, comfy, and cool—my perfect wedding shoe.”
