This Is a Dermatologist's Exact Nighttime Skincare Routine
When it comes to skincare, there's no one-size-fits-all approach—many of us spend half our lives testing different products in search of the elusive gems that actually complement our unique complexion. This fact makes the personal skincare philosophies of dermatologists all the more interesting; considering they've dedicated their lives to studying skincare, it's safe to assume they've developed an infallible skincare regimen. In that vein, Women's Health reached out to Annie Chiu, MD, a dermatologist at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and the director of The Derm Institute of North Redondo Beach, about her nighttime skincare regimen. Read up on Chiu's routine, favorite products, and her personal recommendations in her own words below:
I use a Neutrogena Makeup Remover Cleansing Towelettes ($18 for a pack of six) to remove excess makeup and break down oils and dirt at night before cleansing—this is my way of 'double cleansing.' And then, I kid you not, I use all the below listed products in this order every single night. So that my regime feels amazing, I incorporate natural botanicals like lavender, rose and floral extracts that help me relax and feel like this is my special luxury ritual before bedtime. After wiping off my makeup, I apply the following:
- Murad Hydrating Toner ($47)
- Tata Harper Hydrating Floral Essence ($122)
- SkinMedica TNS Essential Serum ($292)
- Skinceuticals CE Ferulic Serum ($188)
- SkinMedica Dermal Repair Cream ($186)
- By Terry Baume de Rose lip balm ($54)
I don't neglect areas like my neck, décolleté, and lips. And I load up on serums, which have the most potent of active skincare ingredients. Yes, I literally use three as you can see, but because they're not thick, they layer beautifully. I mix prescription retinol into my skincare routine. It's no frills, but it works! And even though this seems like a marathon regimen, it takes me five minutes. I don't wait between steps because I want to get to bed!
