In an ideal world, we would say goodbye to procrastination—we’re all about productivity. So while we patiently wait for someone to find the perfect balance between getting stuff done and getting enough sleep, we may have found the next best thing: Say hello to the coffee nap.
Here’s how it’s supposed to work: Drink a normal cup of coffee and immediately take a nap after. The caffeine won’t kick in for about 30 minutes (which is ideal for an effective nap anyway), so it won’t be hard to go to sleep. The caffeine will act as an extra energy boost once you wake up, making you not only rested but more productive to tackle whatever you have planned for the rest of the day.
Yes, it sounds counterintuitive to take a stimulant like caffeine just as you’re about to take a quick nap, but there have been a few studies to back up the claim that it actually increases productivity. A study published in the journal Psychophysiology found that adults who drank about two cups of coffee right before a nap performed better on a simulated driving test over those who just took a nap without caffeine. Another study published in the journal Ergonomics found that men who drank coffee with their naps performed better on cognitive tests than their counterparts.
Many doctors and therapists, however, do warn against its many setbacks. In an interview with the Huffington Post, sleep specialist at the University of Kansas Suzanne Stevens, MD, says that people can ingest the wrong amount of caffeine to really utilize a coffee nap. California therapist Elika Kormeili also told the site that it can make it harder for someone to fall asleep at night.
So while this may not be the definite answer to handling our hectic schedules better, it could be something worth trying.
