6 Unusual Solutions to Clean Your Carpet

Jillian Knox Finley

Entertaining often wreaks havoc on carpets. Mopping up a red wine spill mid-party can trigger significant host anxiety. These easy, household hacks are here to keep your carpets sparkling and new, despite the occasional casualty. Keep reading to see our favourite unexpected solutions for spotless floors.

Meat Tenderizer

If you find yourself in the midst of a meat carving accident, a solution of equal parts meat tenderizer and cold water will remove any blood stains from carpet. Cover the stain and let sit for 30 minutes then lightly sponge off with cold water.

Hydrogen Peroxide

Combining hydrogen peroxide with a teaspoon of cream of tartar will lift just about anything from your rugs. Massage the paste into the stain with a cloth and rinse.

Salt + White Wine

Spilled red wine? Reach for the chardonnay. If you act quickly, pouring white wine immediately over a red wine spill will dilute the colour. Clean lightly with a cloth or sponge and cold water, then sprinkle the spot with salt. Allow the salt to set and absorb for 10 minutes. After the time is up vacuum over the remains. If you’re dealing with a grease stain, one part salt to four parts rubbing alcohol rubbed into the area will break up oils.

Laundry Detergent

For natural-fibre carpets, mix one teaspoon of translucent liquid detergent into one cup of lukewarm water. If you’re dealing with a synthetic rug, use only ¼ teaspoon of detergent, such as Dawn, in your solution. Soak a clean, soft cloth in the mix and apply to the stain. Rub in gently, rinse and repeat.

Another beverage-on-beverage hack. Beer will lift coffee stains out of the carpet. Simply pour a few tablespoons onto the offending mark and rub the brew in lightly with a soft cloth. Repeat as needed, until the stain has lifted. You’ll also want to sponge off the remaining alcohol with cold water to remove any sugars that may linger behind.

White Vinegar

If you can get past the scent, vinegar is one of the most economical and non-toxic cleaning solutions around. Generally, a one-to-one vinegar to water ratio applies. 1/4 cup white distilled vinegar and 1/4 cup of water should be enough to tackle a small stain on natural-fibre carpets. For synthetic rugs, double the water ratio. This easy mix is great to keep on hand, especially whole entertaining. Mix up a batch and keep it in a spray bottle to quickly lift stains. Just spay lightly, set and sponge off with a clean, damp cloth. If you need to get out stubborn dirt stains, adding a bit of texture via a tablespoon of cornstarch in a one to one ration will add a little more power.
