A Totally Rad Kid's Room Makeover
When Jillian Clark, cofounder and wedding editor of 100 Layer Cake (and Cakelet) and husband Scott moved from New York into a new home in Venice, CA, it provided a major upgrade for their son Liam. Previously he called a closet his nursery (albeit a very well-decorated closet). The new space, and the fact that he had outgrown the crib, inspired Clark to redecorate her three-and-a-half-year-old son Liam's room. The outcome is as exhilarating as catching the perfect wave. When nailing down inspiration for the space, two things inspired Clark. "Obviously being in Southern California inspired the surf theme. We ride our bikes to the beach all the time," she says. The second was Liam's love for a yellow Jenny Lind bed. "He was so excited to see the yellow bed at Land of Nod. His face just lit up. Every time I would pull my inspiration board together he'd say 'There's the yellow bed!'"
Clark kept the budget under control by incorporating DIYs, family heirlooms, and artwork (and surfboards) from friend; by scouring Etsy; and by refurbishing a dresser found on Craigslist. The most impressive is her IKEA bookshelf hack: "I started to realise I liked the white on wood look, like on the dresser and side table. So I bought an IKEA shelving unit, had plywood cut to the exact size that I needed for the shelves, and then sanded and stained them. It elevated the whole look of the bookshelf to feel custom." Clark's one splurge item was the wallpaper. "I knew I had to have it." But she saved on the install and stayed in budget by hiring a paperhanger recommended to her at a local paint store.
The biggest challenge in designing a space for a kid is to keep it age appropriate for years to come. "It feels like something he will easily grow into, like it's a little older than he is right now." Forgoing the baby décor and aiming for an older design is a good strategy when decorating for kids. "By the time he's seven, he'll be like "I've got the coolest room ever!'"
