One Easy, Effective Way to Be an Excellent Boss
Two recent studies referenced by the Harvard Business Review confirm that recognition directly affects employee morale and engagement. In order to be effective, recognition needs to happen right away and recur on a consistent basis. If an employee performs well, call out his or her excellent accomplishments. Written notes far surpass the quality of email recognition, and public recognition in a meeting or peer group has the strongest effect on employee morale. Most of all, by recognizing the accomplishments of your team members, you build a strong boss-employee bond that will nurture a positive, high-energy, and loyal work environment.
One 2014 study included 2415 employees speaking seven different languages across 10 countries. The data pointed to a strong correlation between loyalty and acknowledgment. Of the 512 U.S. employees who stated that their company has strong recognition practices, 87% feel a strong relationship with their direct manager. Among the employees who stated that their company has weak recognition practices, that number plunged to 51%.
Science also confirms that by publically recognizing high-performing employees, you motivate your entire team to perform at a higher level.
The bottom line: If you want happy, engaged employees, give vocal recognition when it is due.
