These Are the 7 Best Foods to Fight Inflammation (and Balance Out Acidity)
We're well-versed in inflammation as it relates to gut health. But as POPSUGAR points out, acidity and inflammation have just as intimate of a relationship. "Whether it's aches and pains, stiffness, headaches, indigestion, stomachaches, yeast imbalances, viruses, low energy, weight gain, or free-radical damage, it often goes back to two things: acidity and inflammation," explains the publication. "Our bodies need a very specific pH balance to function and maintain homeostasis. Even slight changes to the pH of our blood, for instance, can be extremely problematic."
In other words, consuming highly acidic foods, like caffeine, alcohol, processed foods, sugars, refined flours, pasteurized dairy, and animal proteins, can throw off this balance and result in inflammation. "Stress also contributes greatly to an acidic environment," the publication adds. To balance out this acidity and help curb inflammation, they recommend making the following seven foods a consistent part of your diet:
- Leafy green vegetables
- Fish oils
- Bone broth
- Coconut oil
As a general rule of thumb, aim to consume 80% alkaline foods, like the ones listed above, and 20% acidic foods. "Fresh fruits and vegetables that have been lightly seasoned and cooked should be the focus of your diet," PopSugar concludes. "Fight inflammation in the kitchen, not the pharmacy."
