The diet industry can be as fickle as fashion—one day everyone is trying the 80:20 diet, the next, it's all about eating Paleo foods. Amid the torrent of fads and fleeting trends, it can be hard to know what actually works.
If adopting a healthy eating plan is one of your New Year's resolutions, take note of the latest report by U.S. News and World Report. The annual list called on a panel of dietitians and nutritionists to determine which diets work and which aren't worth your time.
The panel ranked 38 popular diets based on a number of factors, including how easy it is to follow, how safe it is, the nutritional merit, and how well it helps prevent heart disease and diabetes. The Whole30 diet was named the worst diet to adopt, dubbed by experts as too restrictive. Interestingly, the Dukan and paleo diets also ranked low on the list.

- DASH diet: DASH stands for dietary approaches to stop hypertension, a common issue in America. This diet took the top spot for the seventh year in a row.
- Mediterranean diet: This diet typically involves eating lots of fruits and vegetables, fish, and whole grains.
- MIND diet: The MIND diet focuses on foods that are believed to help your brain and prevent Alzheimer's disease.
- Flexitarian diet: Developed by registered dietitian Dawn Jackson Blatner, this diet is packed with tofu, beans, lentils, nuts, and eggs.
- Mayo Clinic diet: Tying in fourth place with the Flexitarian diet is an eating plan devised by the Mayo Clinic. It focuses on breaking bad habits and lasts for two weeks.
