Q: What's are the ideal dimensions for a coffee table in relation to the couch?
I find that fans of modern aesthetics tend to gravitate to smaller coffee tables, while traditionalists prefer larger styles. Regardless, I love an oversized coffee table, both for the look and because it can also be used to entertain. Use this rule of thumb:
Width can vary according to your preference and the layout of the room, but from an aesthetic perspective your coffee table's length should be between 10-inches to 18-inches shorter on each side than the ends of your couch. So, if you have a standard 87-inch-long couch, look for a coffee table that's approximately 51 to 57-inches wide.
Right now I'm loving the chunky reclaimed wood options on the market, including Restoration Hardware's Elm Coffee Table and West Elm's Emmerson Block Coffee Table.
