First Thing: This Byron Bay Fashion Designer Shares Her Enviable Morning Routine
Karla Rose’s morning routine is as desirable as her swimwear and lifestyle brand. The co-founder of boutique label, Zulu & Zephyr—a favourite among It-girls around the country—has a morning routine that would make anyone green with envy. As soon as the Byron Bay local is woken up by her one-year-old daughter, Mini, she prepares coconut soaked oats with fresh berries and takes a family trip to one of their favourite beaches for a walk, swim, and surf before strolling into the office. Dream-like, right? It’s no wonder her relaxed, retro-inspired designs are so on point. And we now know why the iconic swimwear range oozes perfection season-after-season—because it was born on the beach. Scroll on to be inspired (and envious) of Rose’s morning routine.
6.00 a.m. Wake up! My one-year-old baby girl, Mini, is my alarm.
7.00 a.m. We put together some coconut soaked oats with fresh berries and head straight to the beach. We live in Byron Bay and our beach of choice is either The Pass or Wategos. Usually, it's a rain, hail, or shine scenario—Mini loves to be in the fresh air, it’s a great excuse for my partner Ben to get a surf in and for me, a fresh walk (usually the lighthouse walk)—before we head to the office.
8.00 a.m. I grab a coconut latte from Sparrow Coffee Co en route to work. Mini comes to the office with me so sometimes we'll walk and other times we drive. Everything in Byron is so close, it’s either a 20 minute walk or a two minute drive from our house.
8.10 a.m. Straight onto emails—I cover both accounts and design for Zulu & Zephyr and like to address any urgent matters as soon as I get in.
10.00 a.m. I break up the morning by catching up with individual staff members while rolling around the office with Mini, who loves going through fabric cards, crawling around in boxes, and playing with her toys in the office.
11.00 a.m. Put Mini down for a sleep in her moses basket at work. I then turn it up a notch and really get into my emails and priority tasks. Her sleep time is my power time where I can completely concentrate. I am a no go zone throughout this time to ensure everything that needs to get done, is done.
12.00 a.m. Lunch is usually takeaway fresh salad from Santos Organics in Jonson Street and as soon as Mini wakes up we pack up and head off for our lunch time swim in the sea. My absolute favourite time of the day.
