Eating for Gut Health? These Are the 4 Things You're (Probably) Doing Wrong
We don’t just eat to eat anymore—we’re eating our way to brighter skin, healthier bones, and now, a healthier gut. Why this new fascination with the bacteria in our gut? Recent studies have shown that a healthier gut leads to a healthier brain, and they have proven that our gut is connected to our moods, stress levels, and behaviours. Read on to see the four things you are likely doing wrong while eating for a healthier gut, according to MindBodyGreen.
1. Eating yoghurt: Most people see yogurt at the store and automatically think it contains probiotics. The reality is that most yogurt products out there have few live bacteria—and are jam-packed with sugar. “If you want to support great gut health, it’s all about fibre—flax seeds, veggies like broccoli and kale, and whole unprocessed grains like quinoa and oats,” says Robin Berlin, MD, founder of Parsley Health.
2. Having too many raw vegetables: For those who suffer from gut problems, eating raw vegetables can make your issues worse. Start by eating more cooked vegetables, and then gradually eat more raw veggies over time. “The ultimate goal is nine servings of vegetables and fruit daily, but if you’re not eating that many servings, work your way up,” says Vincent Pedre, MD, author of Happy Gut ($24).
3. Taking cheat days: If you’re avoiding certain foods because they hurt your stomach, you shouldn’t cheat once in a while. Even sneaking in a few prohibited items can lead to problems like a leaky gut, says Terry Wahls, MD.
4. Drinking a lot of kombucha: “I find that people drink too much kombucha or fermented drinks that can sometimes worsen candida, which wreaks havoc on gut health,” says Taz Bhatia, MD, founder of CentreSpringMD.
