Our Guide to Shopping Vintage Homewares in Sydney

There's nothing quite like the feeling of "the chase". Animal instincts kick in when we see something we really want and we hunt it down until we get what it is we desire. In the context of décor hunting, when we see a piece we like—bonus if no one else has it—we have to have it immediately. We don't care if it ships from New York, if it is going to take an extra four weeks to order in the upholstery we want, or even if there's a slight flaw in the design (it adds character, right?). Some may call this borderline obsession, we call it completely and utterly acceptable human behaviour. The only downside from wanting things that are on trend, apart from our bank accounts going down, is the fact that everyone else also has their eye on them. So how do you combat this issue? Turn your hunter's gaze towards unique vintage pieces. They are all the more desirable now with their one-of-a-kind appeal and rich history bringing that little extra layer of something special to your home.

So, as old has become new again, this is the perfect time to list our favourite vintage and antique stores in Sydney that spark the desire to chase down what it is we really want.

Keep scrolling to discover your next one-off piece, then shop vintage-inspired looks below.

Rust

This qaint store on Sydney's northern beaches is known for its pre-loved pieces that have evolved into something "new". From one-off pieces, such as retro vintage tennis racquets, to custom-made furniture, Rust lives up to its name and many of the pieces are accompanied by patina. Owned by the ex-manager of AC/DC, you know this store is going to have some hidden gems.

For the true collector, Modern2Vintage specialises in modern 20th century design. All items are uploaded to the store's Instagram with a no-nonsense description, allowing you to know exactly what to expect when you step in store (say, an original Swedish Kosta Boda egg vase). If you love all things retro and Scandinavian, welcome home.
