This New Tool Will Forever Change the Way You Email
If you've ever agonized over the wording of an email before hitting send, trying to determine if it comes off as too aggressive, too nice, or a touch rude, we may have found your new favourite tool. IBM has released The Tone Analyser, a new function for its Watson supercomputer that will review your text and advise you if your word choices convey aggression, anger, cheerfulness, or a host of other emotions. According to the creators, "The service uses linguistic analysis to detect and interpret emotional, social, and writing cues that are located within the text." The analyser will examine your email's wording, provide a report on the percentage of words that convey agreeableness, conscientiousness, openness, and many other tones to determine the overall vibe of your note. It can then offer synonyms that will help shift the mood of your text to something a little more aggressive or cheerful, depending on what you want to convey. The tool is currently in an experimental form, but if it can help us more clearly convey our displeasure over canceled happy hour plans without coming off too harsh, we're on board.
