3 Common Habits You Need to Give Up to Be Healthy in 2017

As our world becomes more health-conscious, there are more diets to try, lifestyle adjustments to make, and foods to avoid. But with our growing awareness comes growing room for error, both in terms of the information put out and what we believe to be "healthy." In an effort to clear the air, Business Insider recently compiled a list of the "healthy" habits to toss in 2017.

"We all have them—habits we think are healthy because we heard them somewhere on the news or from a health-conscious friend," writes BI. "And no matter how much we hate them, we just keep doing them because we think they're good for us." Break the cycle by being aware of these common health misconceptions in the new year: 

Using a standing desk: While a valiant, creative effort to combat the many health risks associated with a sedentary nine-to-five lifestyle, standing desks won't actually improve your overall health. According to a study published in the American Society of Nephrology, walking is the only way to effectively temper the negative effects of sitting all day. Save your cash and make a few extra trips to the water cooler throughout the day.

Low-fat diets: Avoiding fat altogether is not the way to improve your health or lose weight. This is according to an eight-year Harvard analysis of 50,000 women who adopted the popular low-fat lifestyle in the 1990s. Not only did most of these women fail to lose any significant amount of weight, they also did not lower their risk of breast cancer, heart disease, or colorectal cancer. Instead, ingest healthy fats like those found in avocados, nuts, and fish. 

Juicing: Popular juicing methods essentially strip any and all nutrients from fresh fruits and veggies, leaving you with unfilling natural sugars. This high-sugar, low-protein diet will lead to hunger pangs, mood swings, and low energy levels.
