Tweeting Just Got Way More Fun
Twitter just majorly upped its fun factor. Long seen as a platform for public figures and media junkies, Twitter has been losing the popularity contest to rivals Facebook and Snapchat. So, it was only a matter of time before the social network added filters in an attempt to appeal to younger users.
The virtual stickers, which launched this week, include many of your favourite emoji, as well as original iconography developed by Twitter itself. Users can layer the stickers over any photo they upload to their timelines. As with Facebook and Snapchat versions, the stickers can be resised, rotated, and multiplied.
But beyond the requisite images like sunglasses, flowers, and guys surfing, Twitter also plans to launch stickers that are timed to specific events, similar to what Snapchat does. Aside from its struggle to maintain relevance, Twitter has also struggled to monetise its wide reach. The introduction of stickers could change all that, as Line, a popular messaging app in Asia, reportedly sold $286 million USD worth of stickers in the past year alone.
Twitter will also let users search stickers like hashtags, which means they'll be able to see how a specific sticker is being used all over the world. So, if you can't wait to find out how the rest of the world uses the eggplant emoji, fear not: Twitter stickers will be fully rolled out within the coming weeks.
