Real Weddings: An Alfresco Garden Party in SoCal
From the caterer that’s everything your foodie partner ever dreamed of to the reception band that plays your favourite cover song, it takes a village to put a wedding on. Those who rise to the challenge to plan it all themselves are truly, truly impressive. For the rest of us, a wedding planner makes the crazy, hectic engagement period a bit more manageable and can help bring your vision to life. After Venice Beach dwellers Jamie and Amy got engaged, they hired GATHER Events to help make their dream day a reality.
As former New Yorkers who’d quickly fallen in love with their West Coast lifestyle, they decided SoCal was where they would get married. The bride, Amy, tells us their choice of location was “partially because the thought of planning a wedding from the opposite coast was too overwhelming, but mostly because we wanted to share all the things we love about living in Southern California with our family and friends from around the world.” Consequently, finding the perfect venue became all the more critical. The Adamson House, a historic 19th-century residence and estate within Malibu Lagoon State Beach, “was an easy choice,” Amy tells us. “We knew it would wow our guests.” The couple also loved the fact that it was located within a state park and open to the public, making it a place they could return to for years to come.
The venue required that they couple bring in everything from lighting to décor to kitchen equipment, so GATHER sourced a number of vendors for the special day. “Amy and Jamie envisioned a fresh, sophisticated, elegant garden wedding,” the event planners tell us. “Working with the beautiful property as a backdrop, we chose understated but impactful design details.” The designers chose a simple black-and-white colour palette, which paired beautifully with lush greenery and textured florals by Krista Jon Floral. Vintage and modern details like a Victorian settee and a Gustavian buffet from Archive Vintage Rentals created a timeless aesthetic.
Dinner tables were dressed with mismatched vintage china, flatware, and cut crystal from Archive Vintage Rentals.
A family-style feast by Whoa Nelly Catering created a laid-back California vibe.
Red Clay manned the bar with refreshing and colorful cocktails.
Some of the most personal details, like cameos belonging to Amy’s late grandmother and great aunt pinned to her bouquet, were the most special.
Bridesmaids selected their own dresses in blush and Champagne tones.
Groomsmen sported timeless black tuxedos.
The groom’s father served as the officiant, and the couples’ siblings served as maid of honor and best men.
Needless to say, the day was picture-perfect.
