Incredibly Happy and Healthy People Live By These 3 Habits—Do You?
While we definitely appreciate the life-changing health treatments that modern Western medicine has to offer, there's also something to be said for ancient practices hailing from the East. When it comes personal healing, quite often people turn to holistic practices—those that are considered "alternative" by the "traditional" West—in order to guide themselves toward the path of self-love, as yoga instructor and best-selling author Ananta Ripa Ajmera explains on MindBodyGreen.
Despite being deemed "healthy" by Western doctors, Ajmera reveals that she still struggled with anxiety, eating disorders, and inexplicable pain. A journey to reconnect with her roots in India led her to discover Ayurveda, an ancient system of spiritual healing that helped alleviate her many health issues. Now a certified Ayurveda health practitioner, Ajmera shares some of the secrets that helped her tune up her lifestyle and balance her mind, body, and soul. Read on for three Ayurvedic practices to follow in order live a happier, healthier life.
1. Stop trying to please everyone. "I used to be a huge people pleaser," says Ajmera. While we can relate to striving to be well liked, self-approval should take priority. "Approving yourself means saying yes to yourself, to health, and the kind of life you want to live," she explains.
2. Enjoy the silence. "Life happens in the moment," the Ayurveda expert says, and our thoughts often drift into replaying mistakes of our past or speculating about the "what-ifs" of the future. Whenever we begin to feel anxious, she recommends reconnecting with the present by taking a moment to pause, close our eyes briefly, and focus on breathing.
3. Reconnect with nature. We all rely on technology to connect with friends, as tools in our career, or as a way to keep up with the news. But nothing brings natural healing quite like a breath of fresh air. "Nature is the ultimate healer," says Ajmera. "The ancient Indian sages, the very ones who the science of Ayurveda was revealed to, spent their entire lifetimes observing nature."
