While it may not be topping your travel bucket list (yet), Freshwater on Sydney’s northern beaches is certainly worthy of it. Located just north of Manly, Freshwater is home to some of the best kept secrets in town. Just ask beauty entrepreneur and local, Eleanor Pendleton.

While its quaint tree-lined streets and pristine beach are worth the visit themselves, the underrated suburb’s shopping and culinary offering is next to none. We quizzed the Gritty Pretty founder and asked her to reveal her go-to haunts in the beachside neighbourhood. The result? A new destination gracing our bucket list. Scroll on for Pendleton’s locals-only guide to Freshwater.

COFFEE

Bent Fork

Every morning when I leave the house for work, I drive through town to pick up a coffee from Bent Fork to enjoy on my drive. I'm a big coffee snob so these guys are my go-to for my Campos caffeine hit. If I'm catching up with a girlfriend, I'll settle in for a cup down the road at Cruise Espresso—the interiors and inspiring mural inside are dreamy.

LUNCH

Pilu

Pilu is one of my favourite restaurants in Sydney. The Sardinian restaurant is situated right on Freshwater beach. Nothing beats 180 degree views of the ocean, impeccable service, and the finest food and wine. It also has a very special meaning to me—I've celebrated my birthday many a time at Pilu and my fiancé took me to Pilu the day after he proposed. Pilu is one of Sydney's best kept secrets (well, until now)!

SHOP

Splice Boutique

Splice Boutique is my local go-to fashion destination. The Splice girls stock all of my favourite Aussie labels—Christopher Esber, camilla and marc, Acler, Dion Lee, Sir the label, Zulu & Zephyr, Viktoria & Woods, and many more. It's dangerously close to my house so anytime I need a new outfit, I pop down to visit the boutique and I know I'll never leave empty handed. My bank balance doesn't love me for it...

Bertie

R.M Williams. Self Portait. Jonathon Simkhai. Matteau. Holly Ryan. Bertie is home to some of my favourite fashion brands—get lost in local and international designers after you've picked up a sweet treat from Mrs Jones The Baker next door.

DINNER

JB & Sons

Tuesday nights at J.B & Sons is burger night. It's the perfect hole in the wall for beers, burgers, and people watching.

DRINK

Stowaway

After work, you can find me having after work drinks with friends at the Stowaway. Nothing beats catching the sunset on the balcony, glass of rosé in hand and catching up with good friends.

FLORIST

Wild Forager

A new but beautiful and sophisticated florist in the heart of Freshwater. I've been waiting for a beautiful florist to open its doors and now I've found my new Sunday morning ritual.

YOGA

Infinite Yoga

Wednesday evening classes at Infinite Yoga Freshwater keep me balanced and focused mid-week. Situated at Freshwater RSL Surf Club, there's nothing better than a class with phenomenal yoga instructor Gabriella Woodward as you take in the incredible views and feel the ocean breeze during bhujangasana (cobra pose).
