Why You Shouldn't Check Your Phone Before Getting Out Of Bed
There have been countless studies done on why we shouldn’t bring our smartphones to bed, from the ill effects of backlit phones that decrease our production of melatonin, to the wireless waves that emit radiation while we sleep.
But, what about the negative effects of waking up next to our smartphones in the morning? According to Tristan Harris, phones have the ability to completely alter our morning routines by exploiting our minds’ weaknesses.
In an essay published on Medium, Google’s former Design Ethicist writes that checking our phones first thing in the morning is a direct result of FOMO, otherwise known as the fear of missing out.
“When we wake up in the morning and turn our phone over to see a list of notifications," Harris writes. "It frames the experience of 'waking up in the morning' around a menu of 'all the things I've missed since yesterday.’"
Harris explains that it's the specific goal of tech designers to find our “blind spots, edges, vulnerabilities, and limits of people's perception, so they can influence what people do without them even realising it."
Some might argue that sleeping with your phone is essential, as it’s become the de facto alarm clock for most of us. But the first thing most people do after shutting off their alarm is check emails or other notifications. Studies have shown that emails are directly linked to anxiety, which means checking your phone before even brushing your teeth is a troubling way of starting your day.
Instead, Harris recommends starting your day with something that will be more beneficial for you in the long run.
