Grocery shopping can be a mixed bag of emotions. You’re hopeful for the recipes soon to be conquered, but also fearful of the final tally. Take control of the checkout with these money-saving tips. You’ll still be able to get all your favourite goodies, whether it’s Cap'n Crunch or burrata, without breaking the bank.
Write out your shopping list while still at home. That way, you can check if you already have something in the pantry. You’re much more likely to steer clear of impulse buys when working off a list.
The unit price (usually right next to the main price) tells what an item’s cost is per pound, gallon, ounce, etc. Believe it or not, sometimes you’re better off buying several smaller packages rather than one large package.
When non-perishables go on sale, buy as much as you can carry. It never hurts to have too much flour on hand. Bonus tip: Stock up on certain items during holiday sales, like baking ingredients, which usually go on sale during Thanksgiving.
After you shop, look back at your receipt and find the most expensive item. Once identified, find an alternative. For example, maybe you start buying chicken instead of steak.
Fruit and veggies won’t just be cheaper when you buy them in season, they’ll taste better too.
A common grocery store blunder is spending too much on specific ingredients called out in a recipe. If you don’t think you’re going to use that rare Indonesian spice after testing out this new recipe, look for a substitute you already have.
There’s nothing worse than throwing out food that’s gone bad in the fridge. Avoid that tragedy by being realistic about what you buy. If you don’t think you can finish that bag of chips before they go stale (or don’t think you should), forgo the purchase.
If you love cooking with fresh herbs, take the ones you don’t use right away and hang them upside down from a piece of twine. When stored in a cool, dry place, you’ll be able to use them for up to six months.
Although it’s tempting to buy pre-chopped lettuce and pre-diced carrots, buy produce in its natural state to save a few bucks.
If you tend to always buy a certain item, say frozen shrimp for example, keep track of which store has the lowest price. That way your shrimp fix won’t cause you to go over budget.
