Tour This Fashion Label’s Light-Filled Melbourne Head Office
Taking a sneak peek inside the head offices, studios, and workshops of the country’s finest brands is undoubtedly one of our favourite past times. So when the team at fashion label, RYDER, welcomed us into its Melbourne HQ, we of course accepted the offer in a heartbeat.
Located in the Victorian capital’s south-east suburb and fashion precinct of Armadale, the light-filled and relaxed upstairs studio is clearly a proud nod to the brand’s effortless, laid-back, and quintessentially Australian style. The founder and designer of RYDER, Penny Brown, has used natural textures, clean colour palettes, indoor plants, and Australian artwork to create an extension of the brand’s dreamy downstairs boutique. “We wanted customers, buyers, and friends to feel the brand ethos, as soon as they walked into the RYDER boutique and studio,” notes Brown. Scroll on to see where the magic happens for this classic Australian fashion label.
MYDOMAINE: Where is the space located?
PENNY BROWN: Our flagship store and studio is located at 1073 High Street, Armadale 3143 VIC.
MD: Who designed the space?
PB: The talented team at Hecker Guthrie designed the original space, and over the past few years the RYDER team has been building on the space to make it our own—Australian artwork adorns the walls, lots of indoor plants, and quirky touches!
MD: What was your inspiration for the design of the space?
PB: We wanted to achieve a laid back and welcoming space. We wanted customers, buyers, and friends to feel the brand ethos, as soon as they walked into the RYDER boutique and studio. The space works well with natural textures, clean colour palettes, and we benefit from a great deal of natural light flooding in the windows, which we love!
MD: What do you love most about the space?
PB: Definitely all our windows—from essentially any space in the store and upstairs in the studio, you can see outdoors and have sunshine streaming in on a wintry day.
MD: What is your favourite item in the space?
PB: The alcove—a lovely colourful tiled indoor space full of indoor plants and character! It is a beautiful extension of our boutique.
MD: How many people occupy the office?
PB: There are three full-time staff and three freelancers who are in and out over the course of the week.
MD: How would you describe the environment and culture of the office?
PB: It’s an inviting space which often feels like our second home! It’s always cosy and always a-buzz with the coming and goings of the fashion industry.
MD: How does the space influence and inspire your work?
PB: I love putting collections together in the space as they work so well together. The space is simple, yet lasting and memorable which is something that runs all the way through the brand aesthetic.
