Happy Birthday, Ralph Lauren! Tour His Homes Across the Globe
There are few people who’ve had more of an influence on classic American style than Ralph Lauren, who celebrates his 75th birthday today. Though he’s best known for his fashion designs, the iconic designer, who launched the Ralph Lauren Home Collection 31 years ago, has given us an equally influential vision for a life lived stylishly at home. Complementing those signature polos and cable knits is a collection of bedding, furniture, lighting, rugs, china, glassware, wallpaper, and paint that’s sophisticated, timeless, and all-American. “It’s all an extension of something I wanted in my life—or my dream life,” he told Architectural Digest last year.
It’s no surprise that Lauren’s own homes (yes, plural) are as elegant as his housewares. Touring them is uncannily like walking into a catalogue. The designer owns five: a rural estate in Bedford, a beach house in Montauk, a high-rise apartment in Manhattan, a tropical retreat in Jamaica, and a 17,000-acre ranch in Colorado. Each has a defined look—Jamaica is lush and white, Manhattan is minimalist and sleek—but each is also undeniably Ralph Lauren. “I think it’s the eye, the taste, and the spirit of the dream” that links them together, he told AD.
