Tour a Barcelona Studio That Mixes Nostalgia and Geometry

Freunde-von-Freunden-Carolina-Iriarte-065-930x620Freunde von Freunden recently took a visit to the Barcelona studio of leather goods designer Carolina Iriarte, and we can't help but feel a pang of envy. Iriarte's home in the Gothic Quarter has the rare kind of bones that are forgiving, so quietly elegant on their own, they will make even a futon look chic. We love the way the apartment's exposed wood beams answer the vivid geometry of the yellow and black floor tiles. The space looks down into a courtyard brimming with palm trees and woven blinds, as well as out onto a wide stone pavilion with fountains.

Of course, Iriarte has an eye for design, so her little vignettes and vintage and antique collections of music, furniture, and photographs are all artfully arranged. "I like past objects that transcend their physical existence and transport us to other times," she says. "They have history. They also have the merit of having made it to us so they are usually of good quality. I find it very inspiring to observe old objects and see how they are made."
