Just like fashion, décor, and fad diets, popular baby names follow culture cues and lifestyle trends. 2015 saw a surprising influx of baby names borrowed from Instagram filters. This year's prime source is also something we see as we scroll through our phones.

According to baby-naming site Nameberry, the hottest baby names of 2016 are straight from the headlines. Names—and other proper nouns—that made the news were picked up my parents-to-be and eventually penned on birth certificates. Among these headlining names are Bowie—as in rock legend David Bowie who passed away in January, Aziz—as in Aziz Ansari, star and creator of the hit Netflix show Master of None, Wilder—like Gener Wilder of Willy Wonka and Young Frankenstein who passed away in August. More bizarre might be the surge in names like Cuba—with the restoration of diplomatic relations between Cuba and the U.S. and the death of Fidel Castro, the country has been a mainstay in the news, and Wrigley—in homage of the Chicago Cubs' famed baseball field after they won the World Series for the first time in 108 years.

Head to the comments to weigh in on your favourite baby names of 2016 and if you welcomed a little one to your family this year, share which name you chose!
