Before & After: A Glam Boudoir For Mad Men's Costume Designer

Julia Millay Walsh

DOSSIER: NAME: Janie Bryant TRADE: Costume designer for Mad Men (premieres April 13) and fashion designer (look for her legwear line, Janie Bryant Leg Couture, next fall). VIBE: Dramatic '70s glamorama. ABODE: Four-bedroom, four-bathroom house in Los Feliz, Los Angeles, CA.

Evidenced by the dapper and ladylike ensembles she creates for Mad Men, Emmy Award-winning costume designer Janie Bryant has a real appreciation for vintage design. Off set, Bryant's brand of old-school glamour is much more no-holds-barred glam than the buttoned-up aesthetic of Betty Draper. All she needed was a little help translating her bold fashion taste into interiors. Enter interior designer Kara Smith, President and Partner of sfa design, who describes her style as "classically chic with a bit of eclectic vintage." _1 Bryant tells us she wanted "to transform the bedroom into a haven," for herself and husband, Peter Yozell. "We wanted to create a luxurious getaway -- serene, calm, and glamorous, reflective of Janie's love for fashion and design," Smith says. To that end, the designer chose a tranquil palette of cream and blush tones, adding intrigue with texture. "We wanted to create subtle depth, so we incorporated mixed-metal-inspired fabrics and finishes, indulging in silver, gold, and rose gold for an unmistakable luxe feel."

_2 Bryant's affinity for Baroque design and '70s styles also had quite an influence. An oversized tufted bed and a tufted ottoman in particular seriously amp up the glam factor. "I've always dreamed of having a dramatic tufted round ottoman," Bryant says. "I love the combination of the ultra modern metallic rose gold fabric with the classic design of the piece. We took a classic piece of furniture and made it super modern and unexpected -- tassels included."

While details like tassels and a crystal chandelier create a certain amount of femininity, it was also important to Bryant that the room also have masculine elements, as she shares it with her husband. Select accessories, like her geometric vases, and artwork, like the horse painting by Jenna Snyder-Phillips, rose to that task. "The photograph is a blend of masculine and feminine characteristics; the strength and power of the animal is balanced by soft, pastel colours," Smith says.

_4The designer also took advantage of the room's unique architecture by creating delineated sleeping and sitting areas. Set in front of a window seat, a pair of Bryant's chairs, which the duo had refinished and reupholstered, create a cosy little sitting area, while an armchair and the ottoman combine to create the perfect reading spot. A chaise lounge upholstered in a yellow geometric print and a high-shine gold garden stool sit just outside the room -- an ideal spot to soak up some Los Angeles sunshine.
