DIY Florist: How to Create the Perfect Autumn Bunch
Nothing livens up your home quite like a fresh bunch of flowers. Between their inviting aesthetic and beautiful fragrance, we can never get enough. The creative masterminds at The Fresh Flower Project—which specialises in natives, wild flowers, and unique floral ingredients—have shared with us their expert tips for creating the perfect arrangements.
“When creating arrangements for your home, it’s best to keep it simple and not over complicate things,” says co-founder Bree Watson. “Create a contemporary style by using high-quality floral ingredients with a nice mix of texture, colour and shapes—the ingredients you choose should reflect your style and the mood you are trying to create.” Read on to find out how to create a faultless arrangement, every time.
Let your instincts guide you and select flowers that you love. Get inspiration from Instagram, creative online publications, magazines, and your favourite artists and choose the blooms that make you feel happy and excited to work with. Let your creativity blossom and develop your own creation that reflects your personality by experimenting with colour, textures, and shapes that reflect your style and home. Some of our favourite autumnal flowers include banksia, grevillea, dahlias, eucalyptus tetragona, protea, dahlias, hydrangea, and freesias.
If you purchase your flowers from the growers' market, prepare them by removing any leaves at the bottom of the stems or those that fall under the water line of the vase. This will help allow your arrangement to last longer. Cut each stem on an angle with secateurs or sharp scissors and cut to suit the length of your vase.
Simple works best. Don’t try to over-do things by combining too many different varieties. We prefer to use two or three larger, more prominent ingredients, and often use natives and wildflowers—they add a lot of character to the arrangement and also look beautiful when dried. Then add your supporting ingredients. Adding a bunch of berries, emu grass, baby pineapples, or wheat can also add a unique element to the creation. The greenery you use doesn't have to be boring as there are so many beautiful leafy and quality options available and if you’re feeling extra creative, we recommend adding a branch feature to the arrangement.
At The Fresh Flower Project, we prefer a more natural, loose arrangement that doesn't manipulate the flowers too much and tend to steer away from the perfectly styled, traditional arrangements. Use your creative eye to look at the different heights and the space between the stems. There’s no set rules but we recommend allowing some of the branches or stems to stand naturally, with some flowing over the vase, and to group the ingredients together rather than evenly distribute them. This will create a more contemporary, sophisticated arrangement for your home. Most of all, have fun, get creative and enjoy!
