What Hollywood’s Top Stars Really Want to Talk About on the Red Carpet
Three years ago, I was in a car ride home from work with two colleagues from The Representation Project, a nonprofit founded by my old boss, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, that inspires individuals and communities to create a world free of stereotypes and injustices. The project’s director of social media was in the car, and he explained that he was having a hard time coming up with a hashtag for their next movement, which involved women and the red carpet.
This was the year after the mani cam debuted, and the organisation felt if actresses could stand up to gender inequalities in show business, it would inspire other women to do the same. I love coming up with hashtags and after brainstorming a few, I said, “What about #AskHerMore?” On the red carpet, all actresses get asked about is what they are wearing and how long it takes them to get ready. Why can’t the media ask more of these famous and talented women?
My little hashtag took off: Reese Witherspoon Instagrammed it the day of the Oscars, it was written about in the New York Times, and it’s still making waves, as recently reported by Variety. Inspired by #AskHerMore, the magazine asked some female award show vets which questions they would like to answer while walking the read carpet. Below, you’ll find their questions.
What is the greatest female story that has not been told?
What do you do when you feel scared of a scene or a part?
What’s your favourite music to listen to on the way to a red carpet?
Do you have a fight song that helps to pump you up to feel like a superstar on the carpet?
Is there one ingredient or essence that has stayed with you from a particular character, that became a part of you, or was already within you? If so, what was it?
When you look back upon the most gratifying moments and achievements in your life, how do you think nominations and awards will rank?
What are you reading right now?
Are there any performances that have particularly influenced you—now or growing up?”
How do you feel about doing red carpet interviews? Do you feel pressure to answer in a certain way?

I'm so proud of being a part of this movement! What do you think of the #AskHerMore campaign?
