The 11 Best Foods for Staying Full While You're Trying to Get in Shape

Sophie Miura

There are a few buzz phrases that tend to dominate conversations about healthy eating. While low-fat, low-calorie, and zero-sugar labels might be plastered on thousands of "healthy" products, nutrition experts recommend shifting your attention to another quality if you're looking to get in shape: fibre.

"The magic of fibre is that it helps you feel full faster and longer, telling your brain that it's time to stop eating," explains Courtney Baron, Thumbtack health and wellness coach and owner of Baron Health & Wellness. "You'll find yourself consuming fewer overall calories by upping your fibre intake."

Before you overhaul your diet with fibre-rich foods, pause; Jennie Miremadi, MS, CNS, LDN, says you can overdo it. "If someone increases their fibre intake all of a sudden, it can cause gas, bloating, cramping, or diarrhoea," she explains. "The key is to slowly and gradually increase the amount of fibre in your diet" and drink plenty of water to aid digestion.

Counting down the days until summer? Baron, Miremadi, and Lisa M. Davis, chief nutrition officer of Terra's Kitchen, share the fibre-rich shopping list that will help kick-start a healthier diet.
