This Melbourne Fashion Blogger Shares Her Top Tips for Travelling to the Maldives
If the Maldives isn’t already sitting at the very top of your bucket list, it should be. The pure white sand, aquamarine waters, and all-year-round summer temperatures are certainly hard to beat. And Melbourne fashion blogger, Jasmin Howell, completely agrees. The stylish brainchild behind fashion blog, Friend in Fashion, recently escaped to the tropical nation and has convinced us to move the destination to the very, very top of our list. “For me, the Maldives is the ultimate escape to paradise—crystal blue waters, the whitest of white sand, and sunshine from dusk to dawn,” says Howell. “This is my second visit to what I like to call ‘heaven on Earth’, and each time I fall more and more in love with this place.” Read on to find out Howell’s top tips for travelling the Maldives in style.
DO take advantage of a stopover! The Maldives is in the middle of nowhere and regardless of what class you fly, being confined to a plane for almost 24 hours is a big ask. Break up the journey and spend a night or two en-route to and from via Singapore. Have a stretch, a shower, a sleep (and in my case a shop), it’s worth it!
DO book an over-water villa at Six Senses Laamu. Trust me, you absolutely won’t be disappointed. There are also a few options with your own pool, which are extra indulgent. It’s the one and only place I stay in the Maldives—pure bliss!
DON’T forget to pack enough swimwear. You’re literally surrounded by gorgeous water, and you’ll find yourself living in your swimwear throughout your vacay. If you think you have packed enough—throw in a couple more pairs!
DON’T forget to be sun-smart. It’s hot in the Maldives, really hot (you’re right on the Equator), so make sure you come prepared. Oversized hats, shades, kaftans, and loose linen shirts which can easily be thrown over swimwear works best. A SPF 50+ (water-friendly) is a saviour.
DO be prepared to say goodbye to your shoes during your stay! One of my favourite parts of island life is that it’s a ‘no shoe’ island. You walk around the pristine island bare-foot and ride your own personalised bike to and from the food and entertainment options. Save the extra space in your luggage to pick up a few new pairs on your way home via Singapore!
DON’T forget the underwater camera—or in my case, cameras! There is so much beauty on this island—above and below the water. I had the opportunity of swimming with ocean turtles, dolphins, and even a couple of cheeky reef sharks (don’t be alarmed they are harmless). You won’t have a shortage of beautiful sights to capture.
DO get active! Even though you’re on vacation, there are so many fun and fabulous activities to take advantage of! I love to stand-up paddleboard, snorkelling every day is a must, the colours and sea-life are like nothing you’ve seen before, and the aerial yoga has to be tried.
DO book your ticket!
