The Outnet

As the fashion director of high-end online retailer and Net-a-Porter sister site THEOUTNET.COM, as well as a mother to two young daughters, Eve Thomas certainly knows a thing or two about work-life balance—and the importance of starting each day in the best way. Based in London, fashion journalism graduate and once fashion contributor for The Times, Thomas ensures her mornings are organised, productive, and motivating. Read on to find out how this fashion insider starts her day from her bustling central London home.

I have always been a morning person, and I like to start my day early. We live up on the 12th floor of a building in Paddington Basin with wonderful views over central London, and I love looking out at the city as it wakes up. I usually get up around 6.30 a.m. I don't need an alarm clock as my body clock usually kicks in around this time, which can be both a blessing and a curse on the very rare occasions when I get to lie in a little later—this is usually only when I’m travelling for business these days.

I'm lucky that both my daughters are good sleepers and rarely wake before 7 a.m., which gives me a chance to jump in the shower and get dressed before they stir. I cleanse my face with Alexandra Soveral's Angel Balm, followed by Rodin Luxury Face Oil. It's heart-wrenchingly expensive, but it smells incredible and makes my skin glow. I justify it to myself with the fact that I don't need to use any other products on my skin.

I lay my clothes out the night before, as well as both my daughters’ clothes, as it makes getting dressed in the morning so much easier. Speed is of the essence, particularly at the moment as my youngest daughter is only four months old and needs to be fed as soon as she wakes up. I like to be dressed by the time she stirs as I can then get my toddler up, dressed, and fed once the baby has had her bottle—if I don't get dressed before that all happens it can be a slippery slope.

I always plan my outfits around one particular piece of clothing. When I'm at work, favourites include my sleeveless navy blue Chloé coat, a white bell-sleeve blouse by Talitha, and Simone Rocha chain detail flats, so I will often dress around one of those. I'm currently on maternity leave, so I like to be more casual and, most importantly, comfortable. I tend to live in jeans or dungarees with an Iris and Ink cashmere sweater and my Étoile Isabel Marant leopard-print moccasins.

I have breakfast with my eldest daughter Grace around 8 a.m. while the little one, Jessica, bounces in the chair. I flick through The Times on my iPad and scan through Instagram and The Business of Fashion. If I'm working we jump in the car around 8.30 a.m. and I drop Grace off at nursery on my way into the office. Luckily we live close to both, which means that I can be at my desk for 9. I like to take my time going through emails that have come in overnight before the work day kicks off at 9.30 a.m. I often find myself in back-to-back meetings, so I like to make sure that I am on top of everything before that starts. If it is show season I'll also go through all the most recent pictures online via Vogue Runway as I like to keep an eye on trends as they develop.
