Inside Fashion Designer Erin Fetherston's Chic New Home Collection
The first thought to strike us upon crossing the threshold of Erin Fetherston’s immaculately edited L.A. abode was paradox found. The designer’s ineffable blend of airy yet grounded aesthetics is at once bohemian and modern, tasteful and imaginative, youthful and timeless. Every bit as inviting and poised as the designer herself, Fetherston’s debut home décor collection, a collaboration with interior design brand Fragments Identity, is marked with a sense of easy charisma and bold femininity—characteristics she’s already well known for in the fashion world.
The collection, a flurry of highly textured white upholstered pieces peppered with jet black and luxe linen details, was in part conceived out of Fetherston’s quest for the holy grail of family homes: the kid-friendly all-white space. On the heels of her first pregnancy, Fetherston moved cross-country to undertake the design of her dream family dwelling. Read on to hear the designer sound off on the happy discoveries she made while feathering her nest, all of which are now conveniently shoppable. If we learned one thing, it’s that Fetherston loves to share.
Undertaking the interior design of the home on her own, the designer says, “I didn’t want to bring any of my old stuff from New York. I just wanted to start from scratch. Now that I’m on the tail end of it, I feel like that was a good choice. I definitely had a few nervous breakdowns trying to do it all myself, nine months pregnant!
“In fashion design, of course, you are making clothes with sensitivity to the body. In interiors, you’re working with the dimensions of a room,” she says.
Fetherstons’ approach to her home mimicked her fashion design process, beginning with a thoughtful approach to materiality. She sourced a number of lush, all-neutral textiles and commissioned a series of bespoke upholstered furniture pieces as a basis for her all-white aesthetic.
“I was drawing up every room in our house to scale on grid paper,” she tells us. “The pregnancy nesting hormone is real! It’s biochemical. I’m already a maniac in terms of design and execution, so this was pretty turbo.
“I made this joke to my husband that my new job was the shipping and logistics manager of our family,” says Fetherston. “Every day, new, giant boxes would show up, the contents of which would be wrong or not what the picture looked like. I was kind of losing my mind. I had about 80% of the house figured out when I knew I needed to call in reinforcements.”
Enter Tammy Price, founder of Fragments Identity, the interior design firm with which Fetherston would come to collaborate to design her first home décor collection. “I have a very strong drive to create but also to share,” says Fetherston of her formal intro to décor. “As we were finding the perfect textiles and the right way to layer, I immediately thought, We have to share this!”
“Originally, Tammy was meant to help me with custom upholstery. I commissioned some special projects,” says Fetherston of her introduction to Price. “I loved her the minute she walked in the door.
“I explained my vision, and she spoke my language. Everyone else was looking at me like I was crazy when I said I wanted an all-white family home,” she adds. “Of course, I am only six months into motherhood. I may live to see everyone else was right.”
We doubt it. Fetherston and Price seem to have landed on the impossible dream: organic, natural materials in a snow-white palette that boast a judicious sense of durability.
“I wanted something light and natural but not fussy,” says Fetherston. “Things that if someone wants to puts their feet up on it, it’s not too precious. The materiality needs to live well and be washable. We cannot live in a doily. We need to live in a cool, easy-going space.”
The collection includes edited and sophisticated staples of everything from chic dog beds and throw pillows to discreet storage solutions. The colour story incorporates high-contrast blacks and whites, with beautifully textured, flaxen-hued linens.
“It’s a fine line between feeling polished and veering into the theatrical,” says the designer of her edited, neutral colour story. “I never want to be overtly derivative. The goal was to channel something soft that’s not a push-over. The collection draws from eclectic influences and yet becomes distilled in a way that can easily mix into any array of aesthetics.”
“Any item that comes into my home I see as a design object,” Fetherston tells us, citing a number of her designs as being born out of necessity. “I simply could not find certain pieces I wanted. Most of the baby merchandise I was shopping was super-bright colours and perhaps not designed in consideration for how it might exist in a cohesive way with an adult home. I thought that there was an opportunity to address that.
“What if my baby carrier is in a fabric that looks great with my couch? Great! That thought of every product having a relationship within the same space was the big idea,” she says.
“Textiles are to a room what jewellery is to the little black dress,” adds Fetherston. “You can completely shift a look with that little adjustment of textiles. We based everything in the mud cloth. It’s indoors. It’s outdoors. It’s a foundation that you can continually layer onto all year round.”
“I aimed for a space that was going to feel serene and calm,” she tells us of her dauntless pursuit toward her pristine, decidedly grown-up (albeit wildly comfortable) home. “Welcoming a baby, I knew I would be spending a lot of time at home. I wanted to create a tranquil environment. To me, a neutral palette does that. The layers of texture that we have, from the Berber rugs on the floor to the African mud cloth, bring the cosy factor.”
“We happen to have a relaxed baby,” Fetherston tells us of her son. “I had to take him on a long outing into a somewhat unpleasant and stressful environment. He’s only 5 months old. As soon as we walked into our house, I saw him smile and look all around. He sort of sat back like, Oh, now I can chill. I thought, He likes the house.
Fetherston and Fragments Identity will continue to launch a series of further collections, all of which plan to layer upon and add to the debut collection. “The fashion calendar cycle is so fast,” Fetherston tells us of her 12-collection annual output. “I do a collection every month,” she continues. “That’s a grueling carousel to be on. Interior design has a different function in people’s lives.”
“Like any new mum, I take a thousand photos of our baby a day,” she muses. “I love that the backdrop is perpetually these beautiful textiles Tammy and I created together. It truly is the backdrop of our lives. It’s very special.”
We might be inclined to call the all-white, ever-so-practical collection the holy grail of upholstery, so we can’t wait to see what she does with winter whites. Stay tuned.
