Emily Henderson and Camila Alves Host a Dream Spring Brunch
Take one sunshiny afternoon, add a pair of entertaining experts, invite a guest list of top bloggers in the game, finish with a healthy helping of spring vibes, and you’d basically be left with our idea of a dream afternoon. That was the scene at this perfectly spring-minded Target brunch, hosted by Emily Henderson and Camila Alves. Scroll now for a peek at the affair with all of its sweet details, plus read our exclusive interview with the masters of ceremony themselves.
What inspired this particular gathering?
Emily Henderson: I love a good show and tell and Target has a great spring collection this year (think lots of fun light, pastel-coloured entertaining pieces), so what better way to show everything off than with a fun brunch? Plus, who doesn’t love a reason to eat, drink and be merry? Luckily, Camila was game, and we invited a few of our favourite Los Angeles-based bloggers, and the rest is history.
What are the must-have entertaining essentials for spring?
Camila Alves: Spring is a great time to have fun with colours. Don’t be afraid to add colour to you spring tablescapes. Mix and match glasses, cups and silverware. It’s another great, fun way to show that the formal winter coats are long gone!
What are some fun and new ideas for setting a table?
Emily Henderson: Mix and match to your heart’s content and build on the pieces you already own with new seasonally-relevant accents!
What colours are you loving this season?
Emily Henderson: I’m always a fan of white, especially if there's a twist, such as a little gold accent that instantly elevates the piece. As most of my readers know, one of my favourite colours is blue, and I think certain shades of it can be refreshing and unexpected for spring. Pieces that remind you of the beach and scream “summer is right around the corner!” are what I’m currently coveting.
What should every host do?
Camila Alves: Set the dining table before guests arrive. It shows you are excited about their company and will make them feel special! I love adding personal touches, as well. If your gathering is not formal enough for assigned seats, use placecard holders to display the recipe of the dish you’re serving! Place candles and flowers outside your front door in a beautiful basket to welcome guests upon entering your home. Little arrangements in the bathroom, kitchen sink and little nooks around my home are the perfect final touches and will make your gathering feel special.
What are some ways to make sure your guests have a great time?
Camila Alves: It’s important to ensure that you guests feel comfortable and relaxed if you want them to have a great time! There are a few things I do before hosting a party, such as making sure there are no dietary restrictions (you want everyone to enjoy the lovely meal you created and feel welcome at your table!), having a few different beverage options on hand to accomodate everyone's preferences, preparing music beforehand (and finding the right volume!), and creating fresh floral arrangements, which you can offer to your guests on their way out as party favours.
What's new for florals?
Emily Henderson: It’s fun to find seasonally relevant ways to incorporate flowers, plants and other natural elements. For me, this season is all about housing florals in untraditional vessels. Think beyond vases—for this brunch, we used assorted dishes in lovely spring colours, and even coffee mugs. Since florals play a big role in all of Camila’s entertaining, we also brought them front and center with an interactive floral bar, where guests were invited to create and take home their own arrangements that incorporated seasonal blooms we picked up at the flower market that morning. So easy, so fun and perfect for spring.
