Elizabeth Cutler: Home and Away
THE DOSSIER: NAME: Elizabeth and Allen Cutler. TRADE: Co-founder of spinning studio SoulCycle (whose 19th studio in Soho opens this week) and Principal of Greenshoot Advisors, respectively. VIBE: Modern country. ABODE: New American-style house in East Hampton, New York.
Elizabeth Cutler and her husband Allen weren't looking for a second home when they happened upon their future residence 13 years ago during a weekend break in Amagansett. "We weren't even planning to go to the Hamptons that weekend," the entrepreneur says. Nevertheless, a spontaneous round of real estate window-shopping led them to their idyllic shingled digs, which won the couple over with its stroll-into-town location: "We wanted the people who came to see us to have a sense of autonomy--to be able to go off and get coffee and ice cream and not be stuck," Cutler says, clarifying: "Not that we're not a good time--we are!"
LUSH LIFE While the Manhattan apartment Cutler and her husband share with their two daughters, Nina, 11, and Lucy, eight, is a zen-like urban escape awash with white, the family's beachy home is a sea of blues and greens. The latter shows up in accents ranging from a collection of century-old antique Majolica pottery gifted to Cutler by her mother, to the hand-painted wallpaper in the girls' room. "When you live in New York City, the articulation of 'concrete jungle' is really true, so I wanted the kids to feel like they're in a verdant garden--that they're in a place that is in touch with nature," Cutler says of the eye-catching Little Havana pattern by Paper Mills.
WORLDLY GOODS Having both spent time in India and Japan, Cutler and her husband share an affinity for eastern traditions that pops up in their décor, including Rajasthani brass female figurine lamps spotted on a trip to India, a white lacquered chest Allen picked up in Singapore, and New York artist Michele Zalopany's painting of Japanese pearl divers. "We both love the foundation of those cultures," says Cutler. "In India and Japan there is such an appreciation for artisans and things that are handmade--there's something very appealing to both of us about that."
GRAND CENTRAL The kitchen has a French country aesthetic that is underpinned by a palpable down-to-earth ease, and outfitted with a zinc-top table, a set of antique Windsor Chairs, and a classic five-arm shaded iron chandelier. "It's the place where a lot of memories are made," says Cutler. "We cook together in there, the kids do their painting projects around the table, and it's the way to the pool--it's the center of everything."
