Home Tour: An Eclectic and Modern LA Home
DOSSIER: NAME: David John Dick and Krista Schrock TRADE: Interior designers at DISC Interiors. VIBE: Sophisticated, eclectic, and modern. ABODE: Three-bedroom, three-bathroom traditional 1940s-era house in Los Angeles' Mid-Wilshire area.
People say you can have too much of a good thing, and such was the case for Los Angeles-based design firm DISC Interiors' clients, a couple who relocated from New York with a great existing collection of furniture and artwork. "Our biggest challenge was making sense of their abundant art collection," interior designer David John Dick says. "They have so much artwork, but only a limited amount of space. Editing can often be difficult, but it is essential."
One intriguing piece that made the cut is a photograph of the south side of Los Angeles by Michael B. Shields; capturing residential streets lined with palm trees, it's a picture of urban sprawl and LA smog -- an unidealized, yet geometrically appealing California. "I love how the white frame almost fades into the wall, allowing this photography to become a window," the designer says. Though the LA photograph is a moment of localism, the house design features numerous finds from the couple's travels to Europe, especially Portugal. "Combined with cutting edge design, for example Jamie Hayon's Ro Chair that we purchased for the home," Dick says, "there's a blend of objects they have collected from their travels that make the home feel personal."

Coincidentally, one of DISC's greatest finds for the home, an exquisite black mahogany desk with exaggerated turned wood legs, was also made in Portugal (though discovered in a downtown LA showroom). Above it is a spectacular moment: a pair of satin brass abstract wall sconces by British brand CTO Lighting frame a gallery wall of figurative and abstract black and white artwork. "They cast this amazing light when softly illuminated," he says.

These eclectic pieces juxtapose beautifully with the home's elegant 1940s architectural details, like wainscoting and heavy paneling, and it's no coincidence. "Our goal was to seamlessly blend the traditional architecture with their eclectic modern aesthetic," Dick says. "We worked with some original colours in the home, but we selected a new, tonal palette that suited their furniture better and opened up the rooms." The previous owner had painted the master bedroom a delicious dark-chocolate hue, but DISC elevated the whole room by painting the ceiling and trims white and having colour-matched linen drapes custom made. "We installed the drapery almost to the ceiling to extend the room's height, making it feel even taller," he says.

With its soothing, earthy colours and multitude of textures, the sophisticated and modern interiors "really work to add another layer of calm to the property," Dick says. Step outside to the property's quiet and spacious outdoor patio and pool, and you'll be surrounded towering hedges and mature trees -- it feels miles away Shield's image of LA sprawl.
