Surprise! These Are the Germiest Places in Your Kitchen
Many of us might guess that the average bathroom, or maybe the mudroom, would be among the dirtier spots in our homes. Turns out, however, that the kitchen is way nastier than you'd ever dreamed. Would you like some E.coli with your avocado toast? Uh, we'll pass. Thankfully, there's plenty of information out there regarding just where the bad stuff is hiding. The Huffington Post gathered data from the public health and safety organisation NSF International to provide a list of the most offending places in your kitchen you need to pay more attention to. Your sponges and dishrags.
This is an obvious one, but it warrants repeating. Not only do sponges pick up bacteria while they're doing their job, they also serve as the perfect damp breeding ground for more to grow. Switch out your sponges regularly, and swap in clean dishrags while you wash the dirty ones as close to daily as possible.
Your refrigerator drawers.
Don't find yourself thinking about your refrigerator drawers very often now, do you? You should be! The vegetable and meat drawers in the fridge took the top two spots in the NSF’s 2013 study. Always keep meat and vegetables separate, and disinfect the compartments often.
Your green smoothie habit is causing your blender to take a take a beating. To keep salmonella, E. coli, yeast, and mould from setting up shop, wash it thoroughly after every single use. That means popping all of the pieces into the dishwasher or washing them with hot soapy water every darn time.
Another obvious one, yes, but it's important to clarify that wiping your sink down with a sponge after washing the dishes won't cut it. Plenty of bacteria will survive that type of cleaning, and the sponges may even introduce more germs to the scene of the crime. Instead, clean your sink once or twice a week with a legit disinfectant spray. We especially love Murchison-Hume's Counter Safe All-Purpose Cleaner ($13).
Your can opener.
Okay, this one caught us off guard, but it actually makes plenty of sense. After all, our can openers are getting pretty cozy with plenty of food products, making it the fourth germiest place in the average kitchen. Who knew? Toss it in the dishwasher with the rest of your load and rest easy.
