Home Tour: Inside a Young Family’s Eclectic California Home
When Amber Lewis, principal designer and owner of Amber Interiors, began work on this California home, she had a firm deadline: a due date. An expectant couple hired her to update their master bedroom and bath, which soon became a starting point for working on the whole home: adding built-ins to the office, a banquette to the kitchen/dining area, and of course, a nursery. “She was a few months pregnant when I started,” says Lewis, “so finishing the project in time was high on the list of requirements!” Showcasing her signature skill of balancing exotic flair with casual simplicity, Lewis was able to give this growing family the perfect place to call home.
Every corner you turn reveals yet another vintage textile to fall in love with in the home. Indigo batik textiles are paired with Chinese embroidery, Persian rugs in rich hues are always underfoot, and an African mud cloth gives the crib some character. However, despite the pattern play, the overall feeling in the home is tranquil. Crisp white walls (in Benjamin Moore’s White Dove) and neutral furnishings keep the space light.
“Most of the time I prefer to use neutral-based larger pieces,” says Lewis. “I feel like it helps to keep a calming vibe throughout the house, especially when we wanted to add a bunch of colour and texture to the space to give it that lived-in feeling. Adding layers and layers helped to make this space feel very eclectic but simple and not over-designed.”
The banquette was added into the kitchen/dining area to accommodate more seating for a growing family. An assortment of pillows make it a comfortable place to linger long after the meal ends.
Because the project grew, along with the client’s belly, Lewis had to keep in mind where to save. “We definitely splurged on the impactful pieces like the tile and built-ins in the master bath, as well as the textiles throughout the house,” she says. “But we saved by buying store-bought drapery from Restoration Hardware in the master bedroom and by re-upholstering vintage furniture.”
Because of the home’s open floor plan and casual furnishings, it’s undeniably a party house. “They love to entertain,” says Lewis. Besides the welcoming interior, the home also features a great outdoor area that is “perfect for large dinner parties and gatherings.”
A ticking-stripe pin board showcases favourite images and invitations above the desk in the office. The rest is stored away in the new built-ins, which feature iron bin pulls.
What’s next for Lewis? “My firm is currently working on quite a few remodels and design projects in Los Angeles and Orange County,” she says. “We are also redesigning and expanding the online shop to include a wider array of home goods and furniture, and in February 2015, I am debuting my new wallpaper collaboration with Studio Four in New York.” Sounds like there are many more opportunities to see the bright, eclectic aesthetic of Amber Interiors!
