Trend to Try: Burl Wood D

Julia Millay Walsh
We're staunch believers that there's beauty in flaws, but if you're not convinced, take one look at burl wood, a material that's trending in the chicest of interiors. Burl wood is cut from burls, which are tree growths with a deformed grain, caused by some form of stress, like an injury or virus. However odd they may look from the exterior, these flawed, bumpy "damaged goods" yield a wood that's prized for its beauty, rarity, and peculiar discolored patterns -- and much sought after for furniture designs, picture frames, and accessories.

What also makes burl wood particularly luxurious is that its twisted and interlocked grain can be extremely hard to work with and prone to chipping. If you come across a large burl wood armoire or credenza, a skilled craftsman and a lot of handiwork was likely behind it.

Get inspired above with a peek at the most stylish settings with burl wood décor and shop our favourite pieces below. Popular in the Art Deco and Hollywood Regency eras, burl wood furniture tends to have a retro vibe, but it can be found in many styles, from traditional picture frames to neo-modern dining tables.
